Hikurangi: Past, present and future

Hikurangi School - Primary

Hikurangi is a small rural town 15 kilometres from Whangarei in sunny Northland. Public schooling began in Hikurangi in 1883 with ten students and today the best school in the world has 211 students in Years 0-8. We are so lucky to have the Northland coast on our doorstep and to be living in a community with strong whanau support.

In the past Hikurangi has had thriving timber, coal mining and dairying industries. The students of Room 4 have been researching the history of their town and in doing so are developing an understanding of how the past has not only been preserved, but how it continues to play a role in shaping the Hikurangi district in present day.
